a line of flight
'"The Day the Palestinians become institutionalized, I will no longer be on their side."' Genet's line of flight is an ever escaping one. Moving, like a tongue moves around a woman's body. Her lover speaks to her through. Signs. far and distant. near and close. close as the dark. a hand reaching her between the dark velvet of its hushed lover grasp.
Mohamed Choukri
Mohamed Choukri was a dear friend of Jean Genet. They first met when Choukri was a fledgling writer in Tangier... Their encounter is told in Choukri's Genet in Tangier.

Jean Genet Suite et Fin _ is a later version of Choukri's encounter with Genet, written years later, in the early 80's . It recounts a visit of Choukri and El Katrani to Genet, who was staying at the time, in the faubourg, St. Denis.

Reading Edmund White's biography (Genet) of Genet you get to see some of the other encounters with Choukri and Genet over the years. Genet's generosity to those he believed in was enduring but at times unpredictable. One has the impression while reading White's English biography, that those who met Genet were magnetized by the force of his way of life, as much as by his writing. I believe this was in part, caused by Genet's belief, that he had to live as he wrote. To live as a nomad, and to evolve principles based on nomadism, to treat each stranger, and every outsider, and especially anyone outside of the world of whites as a fellow traveler on a parallel path.

I mention "White's" English biography. How ironic that Genet's English biographer's family name is White! Especially seeing how Genet hated the Whites.....There is an earlier French biography, based less on ancedote than on Genet's years of writing, but I cannot remember the author's name. Saint Genet, by Sartre, was also a type of biography. Jacques Derrida, has also written a beautiful book, Glas.
Glas , which was inspired by Genet's essay about Rembrandt, reads Genet and Hegel writings side by side . He wrote it in columns that are a sort of cut-up of the poet and the philosopher... the White biography , strange to see reads a bit like a hagiography, and the Derrida book, like a commentary of fragments in contrast to Sartre's more systematic work.
I Jean Genet's son, say Choukri is a son of the bastard lineage as Genet himself was one, as were those they wrote about... Bastard sons of the earth. Children of the night and the stones.

Writing is an economy and like every other exchange, it is a struggle between those who have and those who have not. Genet and Chourki both knew this in their bones and breath.
